Total Hockey  - Second Edition : The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League

Edited by Dan Diamond

The second edition of Total Hockey was published in October 2000 by Total Sports.
With the help of a host of researchers, Dan Diamond, who is responsible for the NHL Guide and Record Book, has compiled the most comprehensive book ever about the sport. The major part of its 1,974 pages consist of a Player Register of all who have participated in at least one game in the NHL, making this the ideal reference book to discover whether your favourite player really played in the big league. But the scope of this vast tome is far wider than this. How it all started, the origins of hockey in every IIHF country, a biography of the notorious Alan Eagleson, the story of the World Championships since 1910, a European Club Directory, the all-time league champions from every hockey playing nation, biograhies of each country's best players, oldtimers hockey, youth hockey, hockey stategy, hockey cards, video games, internet sites. There's just no room even to list all the topics covered. No serious hockey fan should dare be without it.

Cracked Ice : An Insiders Look at the NHL

by Stan Fischler

A 336 page hardcover book published in September 1999 by Masters Press.

Stan Fischler saw his first game before Pearl Harbour was bombed and was a hockey writer before the 1950s started. He speaks out about "... the new NHL era - one where luxury boxes became more important than ordinary seats, where venerable arenas like Chicago Stadium were replaced and the new ones named after corporations and where players were traded not because of a stickhandler's skill but rather because of what the player was earning or wanted to earn."

Fischler tells the story of hockey in the 1990s - the greed, the strikes, the lockouts, management fiascoes, on-ice free-for-alls, a revolving door in the commissioner's office, Nashville's attempts to woo the Jersey Devils south before winning an expansion franchise, the Whalers move from Hartford to North Carolina, the sale of the Islanders to a buyer who didn't have close to the necessary money, the concentration of power in the Players' Association and the 11th-hour bail-outs of Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay.

What makes this all so fascinating is Fischler's stunning reportage, and his own willingness not to just stay objectively cool on the sidelines. "The NHL does not like to hear criticism," he says, "but those of us with a stake in the game believe the problems must be addressed."

Hockey for Dummies

By John Davidson & John Steinbreder

Published in September 1997. This large format paperback book, in a well known series format from IDG Books, has 376 pages. A user friendly book that explains what ice hockey is, what equipment you need to play it and the rules of the game. Chapters covering the league structures in North America are followed by explanations of how the pros stay in shape and how they play the game. There is a section on how to watch the game - at an arena, on TV or in the press. Another section talks about how to start playing yourself (or how to involve you children in ice hockey).  In the final section John Davidson, a former Rangers goalie and well known commentator, gives his Top Tens on various hockey subjects. From page 260 onwards the four appendix chapters give some good reference material - albeit exclusively NHL or North American. Even if you are not new to hockey (or don't live in North America) - this book is an interesting read.

Ice : New Writing on Hockey

Edited by Dale Jacobs

This 228 page paperback published by the Spotted Cow Press in April 1999 brings together hockey and literature. National Post reviewer Roy MacGregor calls it "... a charming little collection ... there is some wonderful stuff here, words to be read aloud, words to be read silently, words to remind us what the game is still all about for a great many of us ...". The editor describes it as follows ".. there are tales of the minor leagues, homages to professional players, memories of youth, connections between parents and children, and descriptions of not only the grace of hockey, but also its terrible beauty. Poetry and prose of current and former players, of both parents and children of players, of long-time fans, of recent converts. Some of the contributors are reverential in tone, some are philosophical, while others approached their subjects with humour; all of them are filled with energy for the game."

The World Cup of Hockey: A History of Hockey's Greatest Tournament

by Joe Pelletier and Patrick Houda

Published in 2001 by Warwick Publishing.  A 240 page hardback book.
The World Cup of Hockey and its predecessor, the Canada Cup, represent the only world hockey championship truly open to the worldıs best players. The result has been, particularly with the 1987 tournament, the highest level of hockey ever achieved in the eyes of most aficionados of the sport. The World Cup features each participant nationıs very best players, competing against one another at an unprecedented level. These athletes play full out, not for money, but for the pride of their country and the love of the game. When hockey is played for those reasons, the result is as pure as it is unforgettable. With 2001 being the 25th anniversary of the original tournament, The World Cup of Hockey looks back at each tournament, recapturing the passion and excitement of great days past. Each tournament, including the Canada Cup tournaments, is looked at separately and features, team-by-team capsules, game-by-game summaries (including box scores), tournament summaries, complete statistical breakdown, plus fascinating and dramatic anecdotes and accounts of the action. In addition, the authors look at how the Canada Cup originated, at the future of the World Cup, the tournament's greatest players, nation-by-nation all-time statistics and a never before seen tournament record section.
